Well Wheel fans, another year is under our belts and to tally up the years, it’s now been 50 years of playing music in Texas! Sooo… we figured an album of some of our favorite Texas songs was in order!
As most of you know the Wheel’s members have numbered in the hundreds! So many great singers and players have graced our stages and albums in the band’s history. This record features some of the earliest and longest standing band members, as well as some of AATW’s newest members who have never been captured on record!
AATW’s newest singer and fiddler Ian Stewart from Austin, Texas, puts his stamp on a number of great songs about Texas. Danny Levin, one of the original AATW members who was there in the beginning in West Virginia, rejoins the band for these recordings on piano and fiddle. The record holder for years and gigs, other than yours truly….. on the drums, David Sanger! Curtis Clogston who took over the steel guitar position in 2023, plays console steel, pedal steel and dobro on the record. Michael Archer, who joined in 2024, holds down the low end on upright bass. Joey Colarusso and Lyon Graulty keep us swingin’ with their horns.
We always love to collaborate and have guests on every album we make. We couldn’t do a record on Texas without having our longtime friend and Texan born and raised, Lyle Lovett, joining us on a song he’s been singing since he was a young boy “Long Tall Texan.”
When we finished recording “Riding High In Texas,” I knew we needed some hot guitar. There’s nobody on the planet hotter right now, both in his playing and career than Billy Strings. We were honored for Billy to join us on this Peter Rowan penned tune.
I hope y’all enjoy this eclectic collection of some of our favorite songs about Texas. The future for AATW is bright, and we’ll keep on Riding High In Texas!
